Public Statement:
Township of Ignace Announces Modest Adjustment to Recreation Centre User Fees to Support Infrastructure Sustainability
IGNACE, ON – The Township of Ignace is committed to providing high-quality services and maintaining our community spaces such as the Recreation Centre, as vibrant, safe hubs for residents and families. To ensure the long-term viability of our local infrastructure, Council has approved a modest adjustment to the hourly rental rates at the Ignace Recreation Centre.
The Ignace Recreation Centre is the heart of our community. However, as operational expenses, utility costs, and required maintenance continue to rise across the province, the current fee structure is no longer sufficient to sustain the facility.
While the Township aggressively pursues provincial grants—such as our recent funding from the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund—and invests heavily in critical structural upgrades, external funding cannot cover ongoing day-to-day operations. It is, however, the expectation that these upgrades will make improvements to energy efficiency, and those savings will be passed down to the residence
The costs to operate, maintain, and repair this multi-purpose facility cannot be borne solely by the municipal budget and local taxpayers. ($320,000 operations vs. @$22,000 revenue) To balance this financial reality and keep residential tax impacts as low as possible, these expenses must be shared equitably with the user groups who directly benefit from the space.
The rebalancing of user fees ensures that our arena and community spaces remain in peak condition today and for future generations. We deeply appreciate the continued support, understanding, and cooperation of our community groups and residents as we work together to keep Ignace a strong, active, and sustainable place to live.
